It happens every three to seven years, but when an El Nio comes, it inherently brings loads of precipitation to the Southwestern United States while leaving the Northwest high and dry. The difference this time around were the unusually cold temperatures and the number of storms that slid down the coast of California rather than the typical subtropical storms that slam into the coast during an El Nio. This led to one of the earliest openings ever for Southern California's Big Bear Mountain Resorts.
