In just one week athletes begin arriving in Virgin, Utah at the site of the 2024 Red Bull Rampage for their first look at the venue. Eight women and eighteen men are prepared to make history as they drop in on the most challenging big mountain freeride event in history. Unfortunately, one additional rider will be unable to make the line-up due to injury and will be replaced by the first alternate.
Swedish slopestyle champion and Red Bull Rampage veteran Emil Johansson had to make the difficult decision to pull out of this year’s event. “After putting in a ton of work to be back from injury in time for Rampage, I had another scan done on my shoulder to see why it wasn’t really recovering well. The scan showed further complications than expected and I will have to undergo a surgery to get my shoulder back to 100%. It hurts to miss Red Bull Rampage this year, but I can’t wait to come back in full force once the time is right,” said Johansson when asked about his status.
As a result, the call went out to first alternate and local Utah resident Ethan Nell who stepped up to the plate and accepted the bid. “After taking a year off, getting back into Rampage has me more motivated and excited than ever before! I’m very grateful for this opportunity and am ready to put down an awesome run,” said Nell upon accepting his spot in the contest.
The field of eight women and eighteen men is now officially locked. Should a rider drop out for any reason beyond this point, according to the athlete rulebook, an alternate will no longer replace the invited rider, and the competition field would simply reduce in size.
The inaugural Red Bull Rampage was held in 2001, and since then, 17 different events and 9 different winners have earmarked their place in the history books. Only time will tell which rider will add their name to the history books as the first-ever women’s winner.
