In a significant development for motorsport enthusiasts, Toyota is set to return to Formula 1 for the first time since 2009 through a technical partnership with the Haas F1 Team. This collaboration, which begins immediately, marks a new chapter for Toyota, who previously spent eight seasons in Formula 1 as a works team and engine supplier, achieving 13 podiums and a best finish of fourth in the constructors' championship.
Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, Haas and Toyota, via their motorsport and R&D division Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR), will share expertise, knowledge, and resources. This partnership will run concurrently with Haas's existing arrangement with Ferrari, a relationship that has been in place since Haas entered the sport in 2016.
Toyota Gazoo Racing will offer design, technical, and manufacturing support to Haas. In return, Haas will provide technical expertise and commercial advantages, aiming to enhance their development and competitiveness within Formula 1. Toyota seeks to advance its own knowledge and capabilities through this partnership.
Ayao Komatsu, the Haas F1 Team boss, expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, "To have a world leader in the automotive sector support and work alongside our organization, while seeking to develop and accelerate their own technical and engineering expertise β itβs simply a partnership with obvious benefits on both sides." He emphasized the significance of accessing Toyota Gazoo Racing's resources and knowledge, which will be crucial in Haas's quest to increase their competitiveness in Formula 1.
Tomoya Takahashi, President of Gazoo Racing Company, shared his enthusiasm, saying, "We are pleased to announce this technical partnership with MoneyGram Haas F1 Team. By competing alongside them at the pinnacle of motorsports, we aim to cultivate drivers, engineers, and mechanics while strengthening the capabilities of both teams."
The announcement was made at Toyota-owned Fuji International Speedway and will see Toyota Gazoo Racing's branding featured prominently on the Haas cars of drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen, starting with the United States Grand Prix in Austin next weekend.
Currently ranked seventh in the constructors' championship, Haas is eager to capitalize on this partnership to improve their standing, with just three points separating them from sixth-place rivals.
