Daniel Ricciardo has officially announced his retirement from racing, closing the chapter on a Formula 1 career that spanned over a decade and delivered eight Grand Prix victories, 32 podiums, and a reputation as one of the sport’s most charismatic stars.

The 36-year-old Australian confirmed the decision ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, revealing he will transition into a new role as Global Racing Ambassador for Ford, the iconic American manufacturer set to return to Formula 1 in 2026 as Red Bull’s engine partner.

“While my racing days are behind me, my love for anything with wheels will always remain high, and for that I am proud to be partnering with Ford to become a Global Ford Racing Ambassador,” Ricciardo said in a statement released by Ford and Formula 1. “It’s such a dream opportunity, and I’m excited to stay connected to the motorsport world in this way.”

A New Role for a Fan Favorite

As Ford’s Global Racing Ambassador, Ricciardo will focus on the company’s motorsport and performance programs, with particular emphasis on the Raptor brand. Known for his passion for trucks and off-road vehicles, Ricciardo described the partnership as a natural fit. He owns a Ford Raptor and has spoken about his admiration for Ford’s design and engineering after visits to the company’s Dearborn headquarters.

Ford said Ricciardo’s role will include promotional appearances, brand activations, and support for Ford’s global motorsport projects. His presence also links the automaker more closely to Formula 1, where its partnership with Red Bull Powertrains will supply engines from 2026.

Closing the F1 Chapter

Ricciardo’s final competitive Formula 1 appearance came at the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix for Racing Bulls, Red Bull’s sister team. He was replaced later that season by young driver Liam Lawson. His career included standout stints at Red Bull, Renault, and McLaren, earning eight wins — most memorably at Monaco in 2018 — and a reputation as one of the grid’s most entertaining personalities.

Though offers reportedly came from other series, including NASCAR and IndyCar, Ricciardo opted against a return to the cockpit. “For me, racing was always about having fun,” he reflected. “It made me happy and created memories that will last a lifetime. Now, I want to keep that passion alive in a new way.”

A Perfect Fit for Ford

Ford’s executives called the announcement significant, both for the brand and for U.S. motorsport fans. “Having Daniel join us as a Global Racing Ambassador is a huge moment,” said Ford Performance Racing leadership. “He embodies the passion, charisma, and competitive spirit that defines our racing culture.”

For Ricciardo, the move represents a bridge between his racing past and a new career phase. “This is the next chapter,” he said. “I can’t wait to bring my energy to Ford, celebrate what makes racing so special, and stay close to the fans.”
