The MotoGP paddock heads to Austria this weekend for the Austrian Grand Prix, where championship narratives and historical streaks collide at the Red Bull Ring. Ducati enters the event riding an extraordinary nine-race winning streak, aiming to make it an even ten, while Marc Márquez arrives determined to conquer one of the few tracks still missing from his trophy cabinet.

Ducati’s Historic Run

The Ducati Lenovo Team has dominated the season, with Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Márquez combining blistering pace with consistent results. The Red Bull Ring, a high-speed circuit perfectly suited to Ducati’s horsepower advantage, has been a happy hunting ground for the Bologna-based squad—Ducati has won every Austrian GP since 2016 except for one.

Bagnaia, leading the 2025 MotoGP World Championship, knows another win here would tighten his grip on the title. “It’s a circuit that plays to our strengths,” he said ahead of practice. “But you can’t take anything for granted in MotoGP—especially here.”

Márquez’s Austrian Ambition

While Ducati’s dominance is undeniable, the individual storylines are just as compelling. For Márquez, Spielberg represents unfinished business. Despite multiple podiums, he has yet to stand on the top step here. “It’s a special track, and I’ve been close before,” Márquez noted. “This weekend is about pushing that final step.”

A victory would be doubly significant—snapping his Spielberg drought and extending Ducati’s stranglehold on the venue.

The Track Challenge

Located in the Styrian hills, the Red Bull Ring is a 4.3km mix of long straights and hard-braking hairpins, demanding a balance between raw speed and precision cornering. Its elevation changes and variable summer weather make tire choice a critical factor. Teams often face the tricky decision of whether to gamble on softer compounds for grip or harder ones for endurance.

“The braking zones here are some of the toughest on the calendar,” said former MotoGP rider and analyst Casey Stoner. “If you can manage tire life and stay in the slipstream, you’re in with a shot until the last lap.”

Championship Context

With seven rounds remaining, the title race is finely poised. Bagnaia’s lead gives him breathing room, but Márquez and other contenders—like Fabio Quartararo and Álex Rins—still have the mathematical potential to mount a late charge. A win in Austria could serve as a momentum shift heading into the flyaway rounds in Asia and Oceania.

What to Watch This Weekend

  • Ducati’s streak: Can they make it ten wins in a row?

  • Márquez’s drought: Will this be the year he finally wins at Spielberg?

  • Weather factor: Rain has played a role in several Austrian GPs, potentially shaking up strategies.

  • Mid-field battles: Riders like Pedro Acosta could surprise with podium challenges.

Schedule:

  • Friday: Free Practice

  • Saturday: Qualifying and Sprint Race

  • Sunday: Main Race

As the engines fire up and the Styrian air fills with the sound of MotoGP machinery, all eyes will be on whether history is made—by Ducati’s unstoppable run, by Márquez’s long-awaited breakthrough, or perhaps by an unexpected challenger.
