Creativity born out of self isolation

To win a BMX contest, a rider not only needs to be technically sound, but most importantly they need to be the most creative. But finding a new outlet for creativity during COViD-19 quarantine times has been difficult.

Then Friday on Instagram live, creativity was found. If you tuned in live or missed it, a game of BMX H.O.R.S.E was unfolding between Terry Adams and Matthias Dandois. Sharing the screen while social distancing, one rider did tricks while the other would narrate the trick and interacts with fans watching. Switching it up and going back and forth, it was next level creative.

The way flatland BMX works is judged solely on creativity, and we draw inspiration from each other. To come together as a community and to connect in other ways is only going to make the BMX community stronger.

But it doesn’t just stop there.

“This is only the beginning,” said Adams. “With these new facetime and zoom riding sessions there are some ideas brewing about an online flatland contest. Flatland BMX is such a global sport and creating a way to connect and have a contest with riders who may not have the means or ability to get to a contest will bring about the sport to a next level. We can change peoples lives through this idea.”

Creativity and progression is still being made even when we cant gather together to compete as we have been used to.

“I feel even more focused than before social distancing,” said Adams. “You focus becomes sharpened to exactly what you want to achieve for yourself. You basically level up to a new and improved you. Flatland BMX for me is a place that I could escape to and find motivation in. The sensation of floating on the bike always finds a way to lift your soul. When I am on my bike, I can disconnect from the world and find peace and joy in my passion. But at the same time, it also has found ways to connect me and other riders on a deeper level too.”
