Andretti Cadillac F1 entry will be powered by a GM power unit starting in 2028.

General Motors (GM) is set to rev up the Formula 1 landscape as they officially join as a power unit manufacturer starting 2028. Mark Reuss, GM President, enthusiastically confirmed that their new Formula 1 entry, the Andretti Cadillac, will run on GM power, reflecting the company’s extensive engineering and racing expertise.

Bringing their A-game to Formula 1, Reuss said, “With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series, and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team. We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world.”

This exciting development follows last month’s approval from FIA for Andretti Cadillac’s Expression of Interest application to race in the FIA Formula One World Championship. GM is already hard at work developing and testing prototype technology to engineer an F1 power unit. This project will boost GM’s proficiency in areas such as electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, high efficiency internal combustion engines, advanced controls, and software systems.

For over a century, GM and Cadillac have used racing as a platform to transfer knowledge and technology from race cars to production vehicles. This has been evident in Cadillac’s V-Series performance portfolio, which turns 20 this year. On the track, Cadillac recently celebrated success with their 5.5L DOHC V-8 powertrain, securing a podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and sweeping the top championship honors for the inaugural IMSA Grand Touring Prototype season. Now, GM is setting sights higher – to redefine racing in the Formula 1 world.

The excitement and anticipation for Andretti Cadillac’s debut in Formula 1 is palpable. With their wealth of engineering experience, paired with their passion and dedication to pushing boundaries, they are poised to make a name for themselves in the world of high-performance racing.

But this move goes beyond just competing on the track. It is a strategic decision that will further enhance GM as a whole as well as the product every day drivers use.
