Shiffrin On Top in St. Moritz Downhill

Shiffrin Wins Her 100th Career Victory Spanning World Cups, World Championships and Olympics.

Mikaela Shiffrin claimed victory in the women’s downhill race in St. Moritz, marking her fourth World Cup downhill win and extending her record-breaking victory count to 91.

Shiffrin, representing the Stifel U.S. Ski Team, showcased her expertise on the slopes as she fearlessly tackled the challenging course. With an aggressive and flawless run, she secured the top spot, leaving her fiercest competitor, Sofia Goggia of Italy, trailing by a mere 0.15 seconds. Goggia settled for second place, while fellow Italian Federica Brignone claimed third.

Reflecting on her remarkable performance, Shiffrin expressed her satisfaction, saying, “Today was amazing. I felt so confident with my plan and my skiing. The biggest challenge for me was trusting myself to dive into the turns with confidence, even if I didn’t ski the perfect line.”

Bella Wright, another member of the Stifel U.S. Ski Team, also had a strong start to her downhill season, finishing in 12th place. She executed an aggressive approach, navigating the pitch flawlessly and crossing the finish line with a smile on her face.

The race, however, faced challenges due to worsening weather conditions. Visibility became extremely poor as the sun disappeared behind clouds, prompting organizers to cancel the race midway through. Despite this, Alice Merryweather, making her return to the World Cup circuit after a three-year hiatus, successfully completed her run.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Merryweather expressed her gratitude, saying, “It has been more than three and a half years since I last competed in a World Cup race, and I’ve dreamt of this day for so long. There are so many emotions, and I am incredibly thankful for everything that has shaped me during my time away.”

The cancellation of the race meant that Jackie Wiles, Keely Cashman, Tricia Mangan, and Lauren Macuga did not have the opportunity to compete.
