Surf | Red Bull Premieres “In Plain Sight”, A Creative Unveiling of Personalities and Subjects Shaped by Surfing

Five-Part Series is Now Available on Red Bull Surfing YouTube; Release Coincides with a Surfboard Raffle in Partnership with 1 Planet One People

Today, Red Bull Media House has released the first episode of “In Plain Sight”, a five-part series produced in partnership with Inherent Bummer. Each episode will feature personalities and subjects that are often touted upon in conversation, but rarely told or explored to the extent they deserve. The remaining four episodes will be released in the coming months on Red Bull Surfing YouTube.

The debut episode of “In Plain Sight” is titled, “Race & Surfing”. Join Selema Masekela as he explores the varied roots of surfing’s origin and its subsequent cultural evolution into what we recognize today.

“It’s crazy how powerful a positive experience, or connection to the water can be,” said Danielle Black Lyons, founding member of 1 Planet One People. “It doesn’t just have to be surfing or riding a great wave, sometimes it’s the smallest things that make the biggest differences.”

“For this series, we worked with directors and creatives to take a closer look at the world of wave riding and what happens below the surface of it all,” said Travis Ferré, producer and founder of Inherent Bummer. “What we discovered was a rich and diverse tapestry of people who love riding waves, and how their experiences have added significant depth to their lives not only as surfers, but as human beings.”

Surfing has long been a sport of connection. No matter where you surf, when you are in the water, you share a bond with surfers from around the world that are surfing their local waves.

“You learn that we’re all in this together when you live and surf somewhere like Los Angeles,” said Hunter Jones, founding member of 1 Planet One People. “You know, we’re all out there in the water together enjoying the ocean, and under the surface there are all these underlying things going on. Whether that’s social or environmental types of issue, surfing is a great vehicle to open conversations that we might not otherwise have.”

Supporting Other Great Causes

In partnership with 1 Planet One People, a collective activation that supports climate action, racial and social equality, and in honor of Black History Month, this release coincides with the launch of a surfboard raffle that will support a range of non-profit organizations.

The founding members of 1 Planet One People, Selema Masekela, Danielle Black Lyons, Hunter Jones and Ryan Harris, have each created a surfboard with Earth Technologies, the lead innovator and premiere eco-surfboard manufacturer. The raffle will end on February 28th at 10am PT and the proceeds for each surfboard will support the following causes.

Ryan Harris, who is also the founder and lead shaper of Earth Technologies, has selected Vote the Ocean. Danielle Black Lyons has selected Native Like Water. Selema Masekela has selected the Life Rolls On Foundation, while Hunter Jones has selected SeaTrees.

“In early 2018 we launched our Zero Waste Initiative,” said Harris. “Waste streams from all production rooms are categorized, then sorted. EPS blank offcuts are sent directly to Marko Foam where they are recycled. The rest of our manufacturing waste is upcycled and recycled into our Greenlines Products. We purposefully keep our drip trays covered with production waste, which allows the waste to saturate with resin that falls off boards during production, and once hard enough we run this waste through our high-density plastic shredder.”

Hunter Jones added, “We are making a mid-length that’s going to be a bit more of a high-performance board with a quad setup. We’re taking one of Ryan’s outlines and tweaking it a little. Ryan’s the master craftsman, but I helped with the outline and sanding it. The resin work turned out incredible. We used these blues and greens to look like kelp under the water.”
